Public Housing and Housing Choice

More and more people now want to apply for Section 8 housing as it has proven to be an effective method for giving families low cost housing. If you want to apply, go to the website of your state’s housing agency which is governed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Your state housing agency has numerous branches throughout cities, so find the one that is nearest you. Those who qualify will get vouchers which you will use for renting an apartment that is under the Section 8 program.

Applying Online for Section 8

The most practical way of applying is to the website of HUD and look for the Office of Housing Choice Vouchers link. There you will find more information about Section 8. Now go to “Information by State” where you will be given a link to all the states. Find the state you are in or want to live in and you will see the information that pertains to your needs.

You should find a link called Get Rental Help or something similar under its “How to” menu. From there you will be sent to another site that has links to all the programs and resources that the state has to offer in relation to housing. That site will also have announcements about the state housing program.

The Application Form

Look for the “Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)” category or link. Choose “PHAs in New York” or whatever state you want to live in. After you click the link, you will be presented with a database of cities. Choose the city that you want to apply. Depending on the PHA you will either get an online application form or their contact information.

If there is an online application form, you can fill the form and submit it. If not, get their contact info and address and go to their office. Call or go to the office and request for an application. Now you just have to wait to get the application form and fill it up.

Getting Help

If you are not sure how to proceed, get in touch with your public housing authority, as they will provide the information you need. They will be in the right position to tell you what needs to be done and how to go about using the application form.

If there is an online website, it will tell you what type of information have to be included, such as your family’s income, the composition of your family, the value of your assets and so on.

Keep in mind that the program is open only to those families whose combined income is 50% under the average income of the city they live in or plan to live in. It is not Section 8 which will determine where you will live, but you. Depending on your financial situation, HUD or the local PHA may help you find a home.

More often though, you will be given a voucher and you will use this to help you with the application process. When your application has been approved, you also need to make sure that the apartment you plan to live in conforms to Section 8 rules. When everything is set, you can sign a lease agreement with the landlord.
