Dan Finlay, co-founder of MetaMask and one of the most prominent figures in Ethereum’s application layer, has announced his departure from Consensys after more than ten years — an exit that marks the end of an era for the world’s most widely used crypto wallet.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” Finlay wrote on social media. “MetaMask started as a way to make Ethereum accessible to everyone. I’m proud of what we built, and I’m excited about what’s next.”

Finlay did not disclose specific plans but said he intends to remain involved in Ethereum ecosystem development independently. The departure adds to a turbulent period for Consensys, which underwent significant layoffs last year and has faced mounting pressure to monetize MetaMask’s 30+ million monthly active wallets.

Consensys named veteran engineer Erik Marks as the new MetaMask product lead effective immediately.
